Precipitation and 10m wind speed extreme exceedances from ERA5, IMERG and ISD and their association with cyclones over North America
Description: | This dataset provides valuable resources for studying extreme weather patterns, climate change impacts, and cyclone-induced hazards over North America. It contains a comprehensive analysis of extreme precipitation and 10-meter wind speed exceedances across North America, based on ERA5 reanalysis data, IMERG satellite observations, and ISD ground-based measurements. The dataset spans the period from 2001 to 2020 and includes high-resolution gridded data, local extreme thresholds, and associations with extratropical cyclones (ETCs). We include extreme exceedance calculations based on the 98th, 99th, and 99.9th percentiles for wind speed and precipitation; storm-specific analyses identifying extreme weather events linked to extratropical cyclones, including storm lists and exceedance metrics; compound extremes where extreme wind and precipitation events occur simultaneously within a 12-hour window; case study data focusing on the 2019 Halloween Storm, with time series and exceedance distributions for this extreme weather event; exceedance duration distributions, probability density functions (PDFs), and seasonal trends. We stored the data in netCDF and text file formats. All necessary analysis and visualization scripts, written in Fortran and Python, are available via Zenodo. |
