dc.description
Inland waters naturally produce and emit large quantities of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Salinity can supress microbial methane production, however, the effect on large-scale emissions is unclear since most studies focus on freshwater systems despite the abundance of salt-rich inland waters. Our survey in the Canadian Prairies, a salt-rich region, revealed lower aquatic methane emissions from small ponds and wetlands than predicted by current freshwater models, related to high salinity levels. The datasets contained here include: 1) Aquatic biogeochemical data from primary sampling sites that include lakes, rivers, ponds, and wetlands from across the Canadian Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). 2) Aquatic biogeochemical data from a peripheral survey of wetlands from across the PPR.
